Low cost digital 3D scanning is combined with the traditional "sliced-bread" method of reproducing a form by layering its cross sections. Once scanned, the model is digitally scaled and the armature designed. Cross sections of the model are then printed, cut out in Styrofoam or wood sheets, and laminated. Fitted around an armature of steel and wood, the cross sectional blocks can then be hand surfaced to clarify the contoured forms. Enlargements can be undersized to allow for a specific thickness of clay or wax covering.

At once robust and adjustable, these foam enlargements capture as much general detail as desired, while still being easily modified and refined at later stages.
