3D Scanning for Portraits

In order to facilitate long-distance commissions, and to minimize the number and length of the sittings required, the subject can be scanned using a Minolta Vivid 300 optical scanner. Essentially a camera combined with a low power (eye-safe) laser, the scanner can scan the individual as quickly as a photograph can be taken. Scans from different angles can then be combined to construct a complete digital model of the subject. This model is then used in conjuction with high resolution photographs as reference for the clay modeling, eliminating the need for lengthy sittings and manual measurements. The entire scanning and photographing process usually takes less than one hour, and is suitable for even children and pets.
